Pleochroism is a fancy term given to a mineral whose chemical structure causes white light to refract through it in such a way that it appears to be one color to someone viewing it from one angle and a different color to someone viewing it from another angle, and yet a different color still to another person observing it from a different third angle! This is why the same tanzanite gemstone can appear to be vivid blue, purple or reddish-brown depending on the type of light it’s being observed in and\/or from what angle it’s being viewed! While scientists have figured out WHY a tanzanite can appear different based on these variables, they can’t explain WHAT makes it behave that way chemically! And because they can’t explain “what” makes tanzanite pleochroic, they can’t replicate that characteristic in a labratory!
