This is due to selenite’s crystal structure, which formed in prismatic or tubular parallel “fibers” as ancient salt lakes evaporated. As light passes through these parallel crystals a flowing, glowing optical effect is produced. Selenite can also produce a true “cat’s eye” effect, so that when you hold a top-quality selenite bead between your thumb and forefinger and allow the light to pass unhindered through it, a slit resembling a cat’s pupil appears in its center! When selenite beads are strung end-to-end and manipulated in the light, the light appears to flow along the length of the strand and move from bead to bead!

Although mesmerizing and beautiful, selenite is a very soft mineral that should be treated with care and stored in a padded box or soft pouch when not on display or being worn (as in the case of this bracelet). Its softness, however, makes it a favorite of stone carvers, as it is easily transformed into beautiful and glowing ornamental objects.

Selenite reminds me that beauty is enduring but can likewise be precariously fragile, so we must each do our part to care for this amazing planet and all its wonders if we desire to pass it on to future generations. Recycle, reuse, repurpose, refurbish, reduce - let selenite REmind us that the small contributions we make today will pay big dividends to our children and grandchildren!

Information About This Gemstone: Selenite formed thousands of years ago as salt water lakes and seas evaporated, and today it is mined in various countries including the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Poland. It is naturally translucent to transparent, but its soft crystals readily absorb pigments so that you will often find selenite dyed in a range of colors! When selenite is shaped and polished, light passes through its crystals and makes it appear to glow. This mineral’s very name, in fact, is derived from the ancient Greek word for moon, “selene”, aptly named due to its characteristic glowing properties.

Selenite is transparent gypsum and is a very soft mineral. Selenite ranks at 2 out of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, which means that things made of selenite can be damaged by harder materials. These are among the rare bracelets that tempt me to be greedy and keep them for myself! Alashan agate is not readily available because it ONLY occurs in a small region of the Gobi desert, which is the Alxa League of Inner Mongolia in China (which is why this semiprecious gemstone is sometimes called “Alxa agate”).

The seams, “cracks” and colors in these beads are 100% natural and make them extra valuable because patterns and colors like these are HIGHLY sought after (and no worries! This agate ranks at a hearty 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale for mineral hardness so it won’t crack)! Added to that, it’s labor-intensive to even get to the mines in such a remote location, and once there the laborers mine these gemstones by hand! Envision traveling for miles upon MILES under a scorching sun through a shifting sea of sand, then laboring to dig with a plastic shovel for a stone while sand flows relentlessly back into the hole - all with hot winds whipping sharp grains of silica into your face and eyes and cutting your exposed skin like a thousand tiny razor blades! That’s the “picture” of mining for this semiprecious agate! All these factors make mining these gemstones a costly endeavor, and their relative unavailability drives their price even higher!

And that’s why these two bracelets have big price tags, but even still I’m offering them at a price lower than you’ll find for a bracelet with beads of equivalent high quality and large size! Yes, it’s an opportunity to price-gouge but that’s just not what “drives” me! I live in Michigan and our most abundant official state rock is called the “Petosky Stone”, which is a grayish fossil rock that is commonly found on Lake Michigan beaches around Petosky, Michigan in the upper part of the lower peninsula (Michigan is weird in that we have two separate land masses that comprise our state, called the “Upper Peninsula” and the “Lower Peninsula”, which incidentally are connected by a single, looming, loooong - and scary! - bridge). Petosky Stones are mainly limestone but contain fossils of an extinct six-sided species of coral (which makes Michigan weirder yet, because coral are saltwater animals and Michigan is known for its many freshwater lakes!). Finding Petosky Stones as a kid ignited my fascination with stones in general but in particular with stones containing fossils, so it makes sense that I find chrysanthemum stone both interesting as a fossil-containing rock and beautiful as a natural stone bead!

I only “discovered” chrysanthemum stone in the winter of 2023, but I already know it will remain among my favorite beads to design with because it reawakened the child in me who loved hunting through Michigan’s MANY rocks for not only Petosky Stones, but for perfectly-shaped stones, sparkly stones, smooth stones, heart-shaped stones and my favorites - stones that looked plain and ordinary when dry but looked like jewels when I rubbed some spit on them! Chrysanthemum stone also inspired me to hunt through the listings of bead sellers to find yet another “new” stone with which I hadn’t previously been familiar and to learn all I could about them! Most importantly is that it inspired me to create jewelry pieces using natural stone and gemstone beads so I could share them in a meaningful way with others through launching my own Etsy shop!

My hope is that you will wear your chrysanthemum stone bracelet as a reminder to reconnect with the child in YOU - that child who was curious and adventurous and who found treasures among ordinary things like pretty rocks! That child is STILL there within you! She or he may have gotten buried along the way under the profundities of “adulting”, but that child is there nonetheless! So make time to do something that once made that child squeal with joy! Go on that nature walk to rediscover the wonders around you in the forests or mountains! Catch that toad in your garden just to say hello (and then let it go when it pees on you! 😂)! Take a barefooted walk on the beach and relish the feeling of sand between your toes as you pick up and inspect interesting pebbles, seashells or pieces of driftwood! Yes, you have responsibilities and worries you didn’t have when you were a child, but the world isn’t going to end if you pause for an hour to let your inner child run free! Nor will it end if you allow him or her to run free for a full afternoon! So go do something just for the sheer joy of it! Some moonstone beads in my jewelry pieces have very small spots of leftover matrix (matrix is the rough rock in which the stone was embedded and from which it was mined). I actually prefer to craft my moonstone pieces with slightly less-than-perfect beads, because as I select each stone’s place in a particular piece I am reminded that life is beautiful despite its “flaws”. And just like moonstone, we may have come from a rough beginning but every one of us is valuable and precious for our inherent and uniquely individual qualities! My hope is that you will be reminded of your own intrinsic value every time you wear your moonstone jewelry, and that you will not think of your imperfections as flaws but as beautiful inclusions that make you precious and one-of-a-kind!

Information About This Gemstone: Most people are familiar with this captivating gemstone and know it by its common name, moonstone, but its mineral name is adularia. Natural moonstone occurs in many different shades, but all moonstone is always rich in feldspars, which are the transparent to lightly colored mineral “building blocks” of the rock creation process. The feldspars interweave as moonstone forms and are responsible for this coveted gemstone’s distinctive shimmer. When ultraviolet rays from the sun are reflected off the feldspar inclusions and into the human eye a mesmeric glowing effect is produced (an effect mineralogists define as “adularescence”). The finest moonstone specimens are colorless and completely transparent and harken from Sri Lanka and southern India, and due to their clarity and rarity can fetch over a thousand dollars per carat!

While I use very nice quality moonstones in my jewelry pieces they are not $1,000 per carat specimens, but they nonetheless have the telltale adularescence that makes them instantly identifiable as moonstones. White moonstone bracelets are almost always strung on clear or white elastic string, but I prefer to use pastel string because it complements the stones themselves. More importantly, using colored string really makes their glow “pop” because light enters the stones, gets blocked by the opaque pigments in the thread and is deflected back through the stones, which amplifies and showcases their beauty!

I absolutely love all stones that produce an “essence” - adularescence, labradorescence, opalescence, etc. However, the natural inclusions in these prized and valuable “essence” gemstones that give them their beauty also give them a weaker molecular structure compared to some other gemstones. Mineralogists use the Mohs Hardness Scale to rank minerals and gemstones from 1 to 10 according to their susceptibility to damage from a harder mineral. Moonstone ranks squarely at 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making it more durable than tooth enamel and a traditional pane of glass (both 5 ), approximately as durable as opal, but not as durable as diamond (a solid 10). For this reason you should treat your moonstone jewelry with relative care and avoid collisions with hard objects, although you can otherwise wear it on a daily basis with no special precautions.

Fun facts: Although white moonstone is closely related to labradorite, it is NOT “white labradorite” as some people think (which is why you will sometimes see white moonstone mistakenly sold as “white labradorite”). While both gemstones are categorized in the feldspar family, they have different mineral compositions. Moonstone is composed of two types of feldspars called orthoclase and albite, whereas labradorite is composed of the feldspars anorthrosite and albite. Gem quality moonstone is semitransparent to transparent, whereas labradorite is always opaque (having no degree of transparency). Lastly, as mentioned above the glow of moonstone is called “adularescence”, whereas the blue, purple, green, red, gray, brown and/or golden glow of labradorite is called “labradorescence”.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0975/1527/4424/files/6D7D47C3-925E-49D5-8887-4614443A7BB8.jpg?v=1788029045
labradorite-and-moonstone-bracelet-the-essences-of-gemstones-bracelet-with-hand-faceted-essence-stones-this-bracelet-literally-glows
Labradorite and moonstone bracelet and/or earrings. I call it the “Essence of Gemstones” bracelet, due to their glowing characteristics being named after the stones themselves - “labradorescence”” for labradorite’s multicolored glow and “adularescence” for moonstone’s blue glow (after its mineral name, adularia). The labradorites circle the bracelet in faceted squares and faceted roundelles with a larger centered labradorite that is faceted in a twisting pattern. The moonstones circle the bracelet in faceted cubes and smooth heishi beads (“heishi” being flat but rounded tire-shaped beads). With the exception of the heishi beads, these gemstones are faceted in what is called “Indian cut” faceting - that is, facets made by Indian (from India) hands rather than being machine made! Indians take great pride in this style of faceting and spend several years under a master lapidarist (stone cutter or carver) learning the skills involved. This vocation often spans generations as the art form is passed down from grandparent to parent to child!

This bracelet is strung on strong stainless steel jewelry wire. It’s just natural for me, then, to be drawn to pink gemstones, among which is rose quartz. Rose quartz contains mineral silicate inclusions, and those inclusions are what give rose quartz its soft pink color. Interestingly, these mineral inclusions formed in lines, or fibers, that aligned in the direction that the quartz crystal grew. If you were to look at a specimen of rose quartz under a powerful microscope, you would see pinkish fibers of borosilicate minerals running in parallel lines through the stone. The vast majority of rose quartz is therefore opaque (not transparent), but rarer rose quartz specimens can be more translucent and can even display “stars” when formed into spheres.

Besides the facts that rose quartz is a gemstone that occurs in my favorite color and that I find its aligned borosilicate inclusions an interesting characteristic, I appreciate rose quartz for its varying shades of pink. Agate can also display “mossy”, “leafy” and “watery” patterns, so it’s just a beautiful mineral to make into jewelry pieces! I favor BIG agate beads (10mm minimum) because larger sizes allow me to really see the variety of distinct patterns and colors this lovely mineral puts on display! Simply put, I find agates aesthetically pleasing, so you’ll see a host of agate pieces in my shop!

Designing with agates always amazes me, because I get overwhelmed by how CREATIVE God is and how He reveals His creativity in the natural elements! I see that nothing is accidental - there is an order to how and when agate forms, and order even among the myriad patterns agate displays! Agate is a tangible way to interact with my Creator - to see His own appreciation for natural beauty! Without any given piece of the “agate equation” - silica + water + oxygen + space (voids in rock or bone into which gelatin-like agate seeps) and time (which allows agate to harden and compress) - this amazing mineral would not exist!

Agate teaches me the lesson that God created ME with intention and order. He arranged the atoms and molecules that formed me into a human being, and according to which order EVERY human being is likewise formed! Everything in creation is interconnected through the artistic mastery of the Creator, including US! I may have a different skin color or eye color than you, but our very MOLECULES make us the same! We are EACH and EVERY ONE of us a masterpiece of our Creator, with our individual “voids” filled in by the gifts He gives us - the gift of music, the gift of creativity, the gift of knowledge, the gift of compassion, empathy and LOVE! When we break ourselves down to a cellular level, we see we are FAR more alike than we are dissimilar! So let us see not our differences, but our sameness as creations of the Creator! He values each one of us as an intentional creation, so let US find each other as valuable creations! When we SEE and UNDERSTAND our sameness it’s harder to hate one another, to take advantage of one another, to fight with and devalue one another! So let us recognize that we are brothers and sisters created with intention and love by our divine Parent! We may be varied like agate in color, shape or size, but we are ONE FAMILY! Let us recognize that and praise our Creator for creating us and loving us just the way we are!

Information about this gemstone: There are over 100 identified types of agate, so I’m only going to discuss individual agate types that I find particularly unique or beautiful (such as Yanyuan agate and Alashan agate) when I list jewelry items made with them. I will include all other agates in this “general agate” category.

Agates are almost completely composed of silica dioxide (SiO2), with small amounts of other elements or minerals lending them a wide range of colors and patterns. Agates are an aggregate, or group, of tightly-packed chalcedony molecules that form layer by layer, and once formed are translucent (meaning a degree of light can pass through the stone. Opaque chalcedony, through which light does not pass, is generally classified as jasper). The layering and crystallization of chalcedony molecules is what gives agate its banded patterns (or “lace” patterns as in the case of “crazy lace” or “blue lace” agates, and even “branch” patterns in the case of dendritic agate), and the presence of other substances is what gives agate its colors.

Agate begins as a silica-rich gelatin-like substance, which seeps into rock cavities and seams and then hardens (crystallizes). Because agate is good at “getting into tight spaces” when gelatinous, it is commonly found in fossilized animal remains (called agatized fossils) and even inside host rocks (called agatized geodes)! All varieties of agate rank between 6 and 7 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, so they’re a stable and durable stone. They’re also EXTREMELY pretty, which is why they’re favored for use in jewelry and carvings.

Fun facts: There are over ONE HUNDRED varieties of agate! Agates can display beautiful bands of richly colored patterns, from concentric circles of colors to lacelike, leaflike and branchlike patterns! This bracelet is made from 100% natural, unenhanced 10mm Laguna lace agate beads. Resembling little planets, these beads display crisp strata patterns and very “earthy” color tones, making this bracelet one you can pair with almost any outfit whether you’re dressed up or down!

Some moonstone beads in my jewelry pieces have very small spots of leftover matrix (matrix is the rough rock in which the stone was embedded and from which it was mined). I actually prefer to craft my moonstone pieces with less-than-perfect beads, because as I select each stone’s place in a particular piece I am reminded that life is beautiful despite its “flaws”. And just like moonstone, we may have come from a rough beginning, but every one of us is valuable and precious for our inherent and uniquely individual qualities!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0975/1527/4424/files/852A6250-D7FC-4F7B-9D6A-8ADD631E5023.jpg?v=1788451794
rainbow-moonstone-bracelet-hand-knotted-with-high-quality-8-9mm-beads
Rainbow moonstone bracelet, hand knotted with high-quality 8-9mm beads!

NOTICE: These are GENUINE gemstones!

While most rose quartz is light pink, some truly beautiful rose quartz specimens that are pinkish-purple to mauve have come from mines in Madagascar. Due to their comparative scarcity they are several times more expensive and valuable than Brazilian rose quartz.

The lesson I take away from rose quartz is that all specimens of it are undeniably beautiful irrespective of their shade of pink. I feel the same about people as I do about rose quartz - that no matter their skin color, no matter where on this planet they were born, no matter their nationality or religion - ALL people are beautiful! I can even find something beautiful about an individual who behaves in an ugly manner or who speaks with a cruel tongue, because I choose to see what is good about them rather than what is “bad” or “wrong”. It’s not always easy, and I don’t look for a positive because I’m nobler or kinder than the next guy; rather, I find something beautiful about them because I know that God’s love for them is equal to the love He has for me! I am FAR from perfect, so I have no business viewing others through critical eyes! When I internationally envision myself standing on equal ground with everybody else , it’s much easier for me to not look down on others!

lnformation About This Gemstone: Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on earth. If you pick up a handful of sand on the beach or a handful of dirt in your front yard, it’s almost a given that it will contain a large amount of tiny quartz granules. Quartz occurs in a host of colors in addition to pink, and clear quartz crystals that contain other minerals - and sometimes even a trapped pocket of water with a tiny air bubble or two! - are quite valuable as gemstones and as collectors’ specimens.

Most rose quartz comes from Brazil, where mines produce consistently well-formed crystals that are shaped into beads, decorative spheres and carvings. Smaller deposits of rose quartz have been found in India and Sri Lanka, and even on the island of Madagascar! Rose quartz ranks at 7 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, making it a hardy mineral that is good for use in jewelry items. It is additionally a good choice for stone carvers and jewelers because it has no cleavage, which is an internal plane or planes within a stone that allows it to break in a smooth line when struck against a harder material (as opposed to breaking or cracking in a random jagged manner). Having no cleavage, it’s not going to crack or split while it’s being carved or set into jewelry, making it a very forgiving stone to work with for beginner stone carvers and apprentice stone setters!

Fun facts: Rose quartz can grow into very large crystals weighing hundreds of carats! Such crystals are a favorite of stone carvers, who shape the crystals into animals, geometric shapes and decorative ornaments that showcase this mineral’s pretty pink color. “Rose quartz” is the familiar name for this mineral, but mineralogists haven’t given it an agreed-upon mineral name like many other minerals have (moonstone’s mineral name is adularia, Finnish labradorite’s mineral name is spectrolite, crystallized hydrated calcium sulfate is called selenite, etc.). Because it contains a borosilicate material that isn’t seen in other minerals, mineralogists don’t know quite what to call it! So among geologists and mineralogists it’s generically known as “pink quartz”.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0975/1527/4424/files/FullSizeRender_7ec279e6-49a1-456c-ac9c-e675d6b115e2.jpg?v=1788464202
sea-sediment-and-black-onyx-bracelet-the-sticks-stones-bracelet-with-your-choice-of-golden-or-silvery-stainless-steel
Sea sediment jasper and black onyx bracelet. We seem not to care if we speak mean or insensitive words to people we don’t know, and unfortunately we often take out our negative emotions and bad days out on the people we love! I made this bracelet as a reminder that the old saying “Sticks and stones can break my bones but names will never hurt me” is FALSE (and always has been)! Harsh, cruel and cold words can and DO hurt, especially when when we speak them to someone who loves us! We must remain mindful of how our words can fall upon the ears and hearts of the people we speak those words TO, whether a coworker, a friend, a family member or lover.

So I present this bracelet with the message I made it to convey, and my hope is that it will remind you to take a step BACK from this world with its coldness and gloom and to speak gently and with kindness, particularly to the people you love! I wear my own bracelet as that same reminder, because I know all too well that I have a tendency to be short and insensitive at home when something or someone has rubbed me the wrong way! Teddy Roosevelt once said to “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” I’m going to edit that and say “Speak softly and throw away the stick”. This world beats us up enough - we don’t need to “beat up” each other with rash or ill-considered words! Throwing away our sticks and stones is a good step we can take toward making our corners of the world a brighter place for ourselves and for those around us!

“If it’s not good enough for me, then it’s not good enough for my customers.

Agates and jaspers can look almost identical, so the best way to determine if a stone is an agate or a jasper is to pass a beam of light over the stone. If any degree of light passes through the stone, it’s classified as “translucent” and is therefore an agate. If the beam of light is blocked by - or appears to “bounce off” - the stone’s surface, it’s classified as “opaque” and is therefore a jasper.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0975/1527/4424/files/1DED4FE5-D24C-4750-AB36-8DABB569B7AB.jpg?v=1788476811
silky-yellow-quartz-bracelet-chatoyant-10mm-buttercream-quartzite-aka-silk-jade-hand-knotted-bracelet-with-metallic-string
Silky yellow quartz bracelet. Rather than a rock, silver obsidian is a type of volcanic glass but is nevertheless considered a gemSTONE that is frequently used in jewelry making (as are other types of obsidian like gold sheen, rainbow and black obsidian)! These obsidians display a glowing or shimmering characteristic that is attributable to gas bubbles trapped within the gemstones. Obsidian is formed when lava cools so quickly that crystals don’t have an opportunity to form, and the lava instead forms into shiny glasslike layers with tiny bubbles of volcanic gas squashed in almost flat lines between the layers. When light enters the stone it is stopped by and reflected off the trapped gas bubbles, giving this gemstone its silvery glow - an optical property that mineralogists define as “aventurescence” or “chatoyance”. I am addicted to gemstones that produce an “essence” - labradorescence (labradorite), adularescence (moonstone), phosphorescence (phosphorite AKA blue apatite) and dozens more! But silver sheen obsidian is unique because it doesn’t have a crystalline structure whereas as most other “essence” gemstones do!

I love quartzes in general, but clear quartz is rare because most quartzes pick up other minerals as they form. Clear quartz is an exception, but still hides feldspars within it! Feldspars are the building blocks of the rock creation process and range from clear and translucent to colorful and opaque. “Clearly” (😏), the feldspars in clear quartz are transparent and can’t be seen with the naked eye, but they’re there - like tiny secrets hidden inside this otherwise beautifully transparent gemstone!

Information About These Gemstones: Obsidian is mined all over the world in volcanic geological regions that have the factors necessary to produce quickly-cooled lava layers, and ONLY volcanic regions can produce this shiny gemstone! Obsidian can be found right here in the United States in places like Oregon, Washington State and Hawaii (among others), and Yellowstone National Park contains an entire mountainside of obsidian! Globally, obsidian is widely occuring and can be found in places including Iceland, Italy, Argentina and Mexico.

Obsidian is a hard, heavy gemstone that ranks at 5.5 out of 10 on the Mohs Mineral Hardness Scale, which is the approximate hardness of a glass dinner plate. It is not nearly as hard as (and can be scratched by) a diamond (ranked at 10), but is harder than (and can scratch) a copper penny. It is a brittle stone but is nonetheless durable and suitable for daily wear as long as you avoid impacts with harder objects. It cleaves, or breaks, in sheets with very hard, sharp edges. Due to its hardness and sharpness, obsidian has been used for centuries in everything from ancient Mesoamerican weapons (like spears, arrow tips and swords) to piercing tools to animal-skinning blades and meat cutters. Modern medicine has even experimented with surgical scalpels made from obsidian!

Quartz is the most abundant mineral on earth and is composed of the elements silicon and oxygen (specifically silicon dioxide, represented chemically as SiO2 - that is, 1 silicon atom and 2 oxygen atoms). The quartz in this bracelet is called “clear quartz” or “rock crystal” and is optically transparent, making it a more valuable and sought-after gemstone! This is because most quartz specimens, such as rutilated quartz and pink quartz, have other minerals included within them as they form, such as sliver-like inclusions of other minerals called “rutiles” and mineral inclusions like iron that make the quartz appear to be colored (but the quartz itself isn’t colored! It’s only the color of the mineral inclusions that make them appear to be colored stones!).

As you can imagine, as the most abundant mineral on earth quartz can be found just about anywhere - in Lake Michigan beach sand, in Malibu Beach sand and even in a handful of dirt from your own front yard! Because of its abundance quartz is mined all over the globe, but finer quality quartzes occur on the Island of Madagascar (where beautiful purplish-pink rose quartz is mined) and in Brazil (which produces the most variety of valuable, high-quality rutilated quartzes). An extremely rare, highly-prized and expensive variety of quartz called “Super Seven” is mined in several locations, including Australia, India and Brazil… and even right here in the USA in Arkansas! Super Seven (also known by its mineral name “cacoxenite amethyst“) is thus named because it’s comprised of seven different mineral crystals - amethyst (the primary mineral in Super Seven), cacoxenite, clear quartz, goethite, lepidocrocite, rutilated quartz and smoky quartz! Super Seven is essentially six mineral crystals encapsulated, or included, in one (amethyst)!

Quartz is among the hardest and heartiest minerals and ranks 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, making it harder than a steel nail (6.5) but not as hard as a drill bit used in masonry (8.5). Due to the way light interacts with quartz, it was used to make the first eyeglass lenses around 700 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia! Just as objects viewed through water appear to be magnified, objects viewed through clear quartz seem to be magnified because it bends light. Light is slowed down when it enters quartz and its wavelength is shortened, which causes light to bend when it enters quartz at an angle. The way light interacts with a gemstone is called its “refractive index”. So clear quartz doesn’t truly magnify an object, but appears to do so because of its refractive optical properties! Another property of clear quartz is that it’s ”birefringent”, or DOUBLY refractive! This means that when ONE ray of light passes through a quartz crystal it is split into TWO rays! This optical property is called birefringence. By comparison, diamond is only singly refractive, so a clear quartz crystal cut and faceted like a round diamond will be twice as sparkly as a round-cut diamond!

Fun Facts: Obsidian shards were used in prehistory to make weapons such as spears, arrows and even swords (obsidian swords would have been impractical, however, because it’s VERY heavy!)! It was also used for more practical everyday uses such as cutting and piercing tools and even dinnerware (knives)! Because obsidian formed in flat layers it breaks in flat layers, and with its durable sharp edges was a natural choice for cutting tools and weapons prior to the Copper and Bronze Ages, during which mankind learned to shape and/or smelt metals and form them into every-day items and weapons of war.

Quartz is not only the most abundant mineral earth, but it’s highly probable that it’s within 10 feet of you at all times! Some well-known and popular gemstones are actually a variety of quartz, including amethyst, citrine, prasiolite and carnelian! Quartz has a wide application of practical daily uses, from timekeeping (in quartz watches and clocks, which rely upon quartz’s stabilizable and “programmable” vibration frequencies to precisely and unerringly measure time!) to filtering fine wines to conducting an electrical current to controlling voltage frequencies in radio transmitters and computers! This is why quartz is one of the most economically important minerals/gemstones in the world and likely surrounds you! A strange but fascinating characteristic of some clear quartz is that it’s ”triboluminescent”, meaning that when it’s rubbed together it creates a spark!

I don’t hate it, but I find other gemstones more interesting and/or more beautiful. Tiger’s eye is also often dyed unnatural colors, and those to me look fakish because many are dyed vibrant colors that rarely exist in nature (such as purple). THESE tiger’s eye beads, however, grabbed me the moment I saw them! With their natural browns, reds, golds and bluish-grays, I find these tiger’s eyes absolutely stunning! “Perfect” tiger’s eye will display one to several sharp bands of light down the middle of round beads, creating a “cat’s eye” (or tiger’s eye!) effect. But in these beads you can see swirls, bands, patches and “stratas” of luminous color, demarcations where one color meets another in the same bead, and also areas of complete crystallization/opaqueness. I think they are fabulously interesting and lovely, so THESE tiger’s eyes get to be in my shop! So it’s nor a matter of loving tiger’s eye, but a matter of loving those stones specifically!

The lesson I took away from working with these beads is that even though I may think I don’t like something (as I don’t usually like tiger’s eye beads), it’s nonetheless good to keep an open mind because something might surprise me (like how strongly these beads appealed to me! That surprised me!)! If I think I have everything in life sorted out and I don’t leave an opportunity for my mind to be changed, I might miss out on something good! So as you wear your tiger’s eye bracelet, be mindful to stay flexible! You never know when something (or someone!) might surprise YOU!

Information about this gemstone: Tiger’s eye is an aggregate of chalcedony quartz with parallel intergrowths of quartz crystals and amphibole fibers. These intergrowths are responsible for the luminous glow (called “chatoyance”) that we see in tiger’s eye stones. When light enters the stone and hits the crystals and fibers it’s bounced, or “refracted”, back out of the stone, creating chatoyance. Natural colors of tiger’s are are due to the presence of iron oxide getting included as it forms. Tiger’s eye is a hardy gemstone, ranking 7 out of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness. Its durability is one reason that it’s used widely in jewelry applications, as it’s not easily cracked or chipped. Tiger’s eye is a favorite of stone carvers for this same reason, so it’s often carved into familiar shapes and statuettes. Because quartz is the most abundant mineral in nature, tiger’s eye forms in many geographical locations, including

Fun facts: Although the hardness of tiger’s eye is ranked on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, it is not a mineral at all! Rather, it is a form of metamorphic rock (rock that began in whole or in part as a different mineral or element). Ancient civilizations associated this gemstone with strength and bravery, including ancient Rome. Roman soldiers wore amulets or artifacts made from tiger’s eye into battle! A rarer form of gray tiger’s eye is called “hawk’s eye” and contains a form of blue asbestos. There’s yet another form called “eagle’s eye”, also known as Pierersite, which is a combination of tiger’s eye and hawk’s eye!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0975/1527/4424/files/432F0DE3-4D91-4293-91CD-C23AEBBBB055.jpg?v=1788536124
moonstone-and-tanzanite-bracelet-dusky-tanzanite-cubes-and-round-moonstones-on-stainless-steel-jeweler-s-wire-pretty-and-petite
Moonstone and tanzanite bracelet.
