And this darling sterling silver gecko brooch is therefore exactly what you expect from me! I really had to research this fellow, because if you can find his twin, it’s not in such excellent condition as this distinguished gentleman is at almost 120 years of age! (lHis official listing date is November 3, 2026.) Made in 1920, this lovely gecko could have ridden astride the breast of a coquettish flapper girl or the bootlegger’s doll from the wrong side of the tracks as she strolled on the arm of her bad-boy beau! It could realistically have tasted the smoke-filled air of a Chicago speakeasy or felt the vibrations from a New Orleans jazz band!

Imagine all that happened since its creator finished it! This brooch might have been completed right before the 18th Amendment was ratified and the Prohibition began! It could have been displayed in a jewelry store window in front of which suffragettes demonstrated on the sidewalk for the right to vote! It was still shiny when Woodrow Wilson left office in 1921, had developed a nice patina when F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was published in 1925, was nicely oxidized when Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928 and might have been pawned in a panic when the stock market crashed in October of 1929! And then all the intervening decades! The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl and WWII; Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, the US’s atomic retribution on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the start of the Cold War; fast forward to hippies, disco, MTV, 9/11, social media and the “digital age”, the USA’s election of its first black President, Apple’s release of the iPad, Wikileaks, COVID-19, the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Trump, Biden and the AI boom! All the history this silver gecko has survived to arrive here in my shop!

You can view this brooch’s details in the photos, but I want to mention that even the pin mechanism and pin stem are sterling silver and that it weighs in at 18g! The recessed areas on its topside have developed a beautiful patina while the raised areas are bright and silvery! It’s simply a stunning piece of jewelry history and silversmithing artistry, and I’m so pleased to be offering it here in my very own online store!

“If it’s not good enough for me, then it’s not good enough for my customers.
